Promoting Sustainable Dog Walking in San Francisco's Natural Areas

Ball Tossing

Give your dog a good run by chucking the ball down paved paths.

Why use the paved path?

The slopes above the road are destabilized when used by dogs or people. Vegetation holds the hill together, but repetitive, off trail use reduces plant cover on the hillside. By sticking to established trails, and throwing the ball on the paved area, we can preserve the trails and plant cover above, while reducing the amount of rocks on the road.

Tire Bella out with ball play and off path activities at sites that are less prone to erosion or have lower restoration value. The Saddle Area is less susceptible to erosion and hosts fewer sensitive species, than the northwest side of the hill. You can catch great views while your dog catches balls up there, too. The Southern and Eastern Quarry sites are also good places to throw the ball uphill if you want your pooch to run on dirt or grass during strenuous games of fetch.
