Promoting Sustainable Dog Walking in San Francisco's Natural Areas

Hill Climbing

Are you seeking beautiful views and vigorous exercise?

It's easy to protect the hill while you and your best friend get a work out!

Professional dog walkers use the stairs built by the Natural Areas Program to access the upper trails on the northwest side of Bernal Hill.

Use established trails to access the top of the hill and the paths that run around it. Consider leashing your dog as you ascend if he or she prefers to use erosion prone gullies to get to upper trails. A few minutes on a leash can protect the entrance at the Esmeralda Steps, and consistently leading Charlie up the stairs will teach him the route that his alpha prefers.
